significant changes to college football coming in 2024

College football is looking different every year, and 2024 is another chapter.

On Friday, the NCAA Rules Committee will vote on the recommendations for a few significant rule changes, according to Yahoo Sports. Although most of the past few years have been dominated by off-field changes with NIL and the transfer portal, these changes will all affect the game itself.

Perhaps the most noteworthy change is the implementation of the helmet communication system. Like the NFL, college football teams will have the ability to communicate with one player on the field.

Coaches will get to talk to one player until the play clock hits 15 seconds, which is when the system will cut off until the next play. Although it may not end the wild playcalling signs in college football, it will drastically reduce how much players need to look to the sideline.

Another change will be the use of tablets on the sideline and at halftime, which has become a particularly large part of the NFL over the past decade. College players getting to look at film in real-time and make appropriate adjustments should allow for another helpful development tool.

Finally, a two-minute warning will come to college football. As if college football needed more stoppages, the break will work the same as the NFL’s at the end of the second and fourth quarters.

The two-minute warning could be one of the most impactful changes to the end of games. With another timeout guaranteed, it could change late-game clock management and the flow of possessions.

As Oklahoma State looks to make its first appearance in the College Football Playoff in 2024, navigating more changes will add to the challenge. Considering OSU’s experience, Mike Gundy’s team might be more equipped to prepare for and take on these changes than most other teams.
