Another recall has been issued, this time over a quality-control problem. If you have bought ham recently, heads up!

A New Jersey-based food and beverage company is recalling thousands of pounds of its ready-to-eat sliced prosciutto ham produced in Germany after it was shipped to eight states without having a U.S. quality check.

Details on the Recall

The recall by ConSup North America Inc. was announced yesterday by the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The recall is for 85,984 pounds of ready-to-eat sliced prosciutto ham made on various dates from September 25, 2023, through March 6, 2024. They were shipped to retail locations in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Meat, poultry, and egg products that are imported into the U.S. must meet all of the safety standards applied to food that is produced here. Most other countries have food regulatory systems, but these imported foods must go through the same sanitary measures to guarantee the same level of protection against food hazards that the U.S. agencies employ.

This is a process that the USDA calls “equivalence” and is overseen by the FSIS.

In this case, there was no equivalent inspection and the error was spotted by the European country’s Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety. The agency notified the FSIS that the company making the products had produced part of the identified lots without the equivalent inspection, but still exported them to the U.S.

The products impacted are the 5.29-oz. plastic packages containing “Stockmeyer PROSCIUTTO Product of GERMANY” with lot codes 09118-3A, 09118-3B, 09120-3A, 09120-3B, 13133-3A, 13133-3B, 13104-3A, 13104-3B, 13105-3A, 13105-3B, 13109-3A, and 13109-3B and “BEST BEFORE:” dates of 4/28/2024, 5/26/2024, 7/7/2024, 8/4/2024, 8/11/2024, and 10/7/2024.

There have been no illnesses reported regarding the products. Consumers who may have the products are urged not to consume them. The ham should either be thrown away or returned to the point of purchase.

If you have questions about this recall, call Luann Servidio, Director of Imports at ConSup North America Inc., at 973-628-7330 or email [email protected].

Other Recalls

There are many other recalls happening right now. This week alone, there has been a recall issued on enchiladas, which may be contaminated with listeria, a recall for cooking oil in glass jars that is at risk of breaking, and a massive recall update on basil for possibly being contaminated with salmonella.

There’s also been a health warning issued for ground meat that may be contaminated with E. coli.
