New York Giants
The New York Giants recently began voluntary workouts. But one player was notably absent from the activities and is reportedly absent due to his current contract situation.
Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton signed a two-year $12.2 million contract prior to last season and will receive $6.2 million this coming season in what will be the last year of his deal.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Slayton could receive $350,000 in bonuses if he did appear at the voluntary workouts. But he has yet to do so because he is seeking a new deal with the team.
It’s obviously a bit concerning for Slayton to be missing the workouts. Especially because he has consistently been in attendance for the Giants’ voluntary workouts in past seasons.
Slayton notably had a very up-and-down season on a struggling Giants offense this past season.
To begin the year, he found himself buried on the depth chart and receiving very little playing time. But he quickly found his way on the field and produced when he was called upon, leading the team in receiving yards this past season.
The Giants have notably been rumored to have interest in wide receivers near the top of the upcoming NFL Draft board such as Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze. So Slayton could very well find himself buried on the depth chart again next year, especially if he continues this holdout.
But on the other hand, if the team doesn’t end up selecting one of the top wideouts, Slayton could be called upon to play a big role in the offense again next year. That is if Slayton ends his holdout at all before the start of the 2024-25 season.
