Giancarlo Esposito Joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Acclaimed actor Giancarlo Esposito is finally making his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has confirmed that he’s landed a role in the MCU, but he’s not divulging which character he’ll be playing.
Per Collider, Esposito was present for a panel on the Thunder Stage at CCXP when he announced that he’d been cast in the MCU. While the Breaking Bad alum didn’t say which role he’ll take on, he revealed that it won’t be Professor X. Up to this point, Esposito had publicly campaigned for his casting as Professor X for the MCU’s X-Men, interested in bringing a different take to the character.

While he won’t be Charles Xavier, Esposito seems pretty happy with the role he has been given. He teased that the character is coming “sooner rather than later,” suggesting that he might be secretly attached to one of the upcoming MCU projects already in production. The Mandalorian actor also said his role will be “better than you can imagine.” He did not share if this would be for a hero or a villain, leaving it up to fans to speculate different possibilities.
It seems worth noting that the casting choice for the villain in The Fantastic Four has not yet been announced, and that the film is currently casting its characters. That opens the door for Esposito to potentially play a major supervillain like Galactus or Doctor Doom. The MCU’s Blade reboot is another film that’s gearing up to start filming this fall, which could be another possibility for Esposito. the actor’s tease of the reveal coming “sooner rather than later” could even allude to a potential appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, the only MCU film that will be released in 2024.

The MCU has eyed Esposito for a potential role for years. He spoke about his hopes to play Professor X in 2022, sharing at the time that he’d been in talks with Marvel Studios about a possible role in that world.

“I’ve been in a room with [Marvel Studios] and talked with them, and to answer your question, I think what they do is on the lines of that mythological journey that Joe Campbell talked about, who happened to be a friend of George Lucas that George Lucas put into his stories,” Esposito said, sharing some character casting possibilities. “So, there’s been talk of Magneto… [and Doctor] Doom. And there is Professor X.”
When asked which role he’d want the most, the actor said, “I’m going to go and put it out in the universe that it is Professor X.”
