PITTSBURGH – Ahead of their second contest in a four-game West Coast road trip, the Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled forward Jonathan Gruden from the American Hockey League. In addition to Gruden’s recall, the Penguins have placed Bryan Rust on injured reserve.

Gruden will make his way to Seattle ahead of the Penguins matchup with the Kraken. Gruden has appeared in five games at the NHL level this season with no points and no shots on goal. He’s averaged 7:20 of ice time per game.

It isn’t yet clear if Gruden will filter into the lineup or if he is just being brought in as a safety net.

Rust suffered an upper-body injury in the Penguins’ victory over the Philadelphia Flyers and remained in Pittsburgh while the team headed West. Rust has already missed a pair of games, both of which the Penguins were victorious in.

In 42 games, Rust has a clean 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 total points. He’s having a big rebound season after a disappointing 2022-23 and could be a massive piece to a possible playoff push.

The Penguins labeled Rust as week-to-week with his upper-body injury.
