Ireland weather: Washout Saturday as Met Eireann gives verdict on chances of snow next week

ireland weather: washout saturday as met eireann gives verdict on chances of snow next week

Rain arriving in the west of Ireland this morning

The rain has most certainly returned this morning as most of the country is set to endure quite a wet Saturday.

Rain arrived first in the western half of Ireland this morning but it will soon extend to all areas and continue into the afternoon, with the potential for mist and fog in some regions.

The rain will calm to just isolated showers on Saturday evening and highest temperatures of between 11C and 14C are forecast today, with moderate to fresh southerly winds.

Saturday night will be cloudy, with showers at times potentially turning heavy and lowest overnight temperatures of between 8C and 10C.

The good news for those hoping to venture out for some outdoor activities this weekend is that Sunday will be a drier day with scattered showers marking the worst of the rainfall and sunny spells will develop into the afternoon, with temperatures ranging between 11C and 14C.

The mild weather is set to take a turn towards the middle of next week – 19 February to 25 February – as Met Eireann is forecasting a major drop in temperatures and even the potential for wintry showers in the form of either sleet or snow.

A spokesperson for Met Eireann said: “An unsettled weather regime is forecast during this period with a strong zonal air-flow allowing numerous Low-Pressure systems to track near Ireland.

“Whilst the week will begin very mild, temperatures will decrease during the second half of the week as colder polar maritime air extends from the North Atlantic. Rainfall amounts are expected to be significantly above average, especially in the west of the country.

“Some wintry precipitation cannot be ruled out by the end of the week with the chance of very strong winds also.”
