After years of sitting comfortably at the #1 spot, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has been dethroned by a newcomer from the Fall 2023 anime season.
The user base at MyAnimeList, the popular anime database and social networking website, has famously ranked Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as the highest-rated anime series of all time. While there are debates about whether the votes for Brotherhood are legit or botted by suspiciously new accounts, there’s no denying the extreme dedication needed to make the 2009 remake of the Fullmetal Alchemist series by Hiromu Arakawa #1 for over a decade. However, FMA’s dominance has now been thwarted by another critically acclaimed anime series.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Overtakes Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on MyAnimeList
Following the Season 1 finale of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, the fantasy-inspired drama claimed the #1 spot as the highest-rated anime series on MAL. Currently, Frieren has an average review score of 9.39. Brotherhood, on the other hand, is ranked #2 with an average review score of 9.09. While rare, there have been moments where Brotherhood has lost its #1 spot, only to reclaim it weeks later. The 90-minute premiere of Oshi no Ko previously took down Brotherhood during the Spring 2023 season but eventually dropped in rank after the hype surrounding its shocking debut died down. At the moment, Oshi no Ko has an 8.68 review score on MAL.
The current enthusiasm for the Season 1 finale of Frieren may only be temporary, leaving Brotherhood the opportunity to reclaim its crown. However, for two cours, Frieren has consistently won the hearts of anime fans and critics alike with its engaging slice-of-life drama about an elven mage named Frieren bestowing her over 1000-year-old wisdom on her human apprentice, Fern. The demand for Frieren has been so strong that it was among the top 10 most pirated TV shows of 2023.

Meanwhile, Brotherhood is ranked #2 with a score of 9.071. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are both available to stream on Crunchyroll.
