There were a couple of names from the Michigan Wolverines championship-winning roster who announced their intentions to move on from the program even before Jim Harbaugh announced his plans for the NFL. Among those were Joey Velazquez who not only played football for the Wolverines, but he also played baseball.
He announced his intention to enter his name into the college football transfer portal before the Wolverines took on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl, while expressing he’d remain with the team throughout the rest of the season.
Of all the places he’s deciding to transfer, he’s heading to Michigan’s biggest rivals, the Ohio State Buckeyes.
“Michigan two-sport athlete Joey Velazquez has transferred to Ohio State. Velazquez was originally an OSU baseball commit but ended up playing both sports at Michigan. The Lewis Center, Ohio native has 8 career tackles and a .255 career batting average!” The Silver Bulletin wrote on X.
Velazquez grew up near Columbus and will apparently walk on to the Buckeyes squad as a grad transfer.
“New Ohio State linebacker Joey Velazquez is the first Michigan to Ohio State transfer since Justin Boren in 2008. Before Boren, no player had done it since before 1945. A truly historic transfer for Velazquez who will be suiting up for the Buckeyes next season,” The Silver Bulletin wrote.
Michigan fans always appreciated the longtime special teamer. Even though this doesn’t happen often, late November will likely be extra special for Velazquez.
