Former Historic Program No Longer A Top 10 Job In College Football
There once was a time when there might not have been a better job in college football than coaching for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. From 1924 to 1988, the Fighting Irish won 11 national championships.
Since then, the Fighting Irish have failed to reach the pinnacle of the sport. That, along with Notre Dame’s refusal to join a conference, has made this job less desirable in today’s age of college football.
With Power 4 conference champions now making the playoffs, it makes their path to the playoffs that much harder. The Fighting Irish are also ineligible to receive a first-round bye, which makes the road to the national title even more difficult.

That’s why 247Sports decided Notre Dame is no longer a Top 10 job in the sport—something that would have seemed ridiculous 30 years ago.
But Notre Dame was not the only team left off the list. One of their bitter rivals, the USC Trojans, whom many consider in the Blue Blood conversation, was also left off the list.
No doubt a fall from grace from two of college football’s most historic programs.
