- Ford released Gen 4 Coyote V8 crate engines with improvements from the original 2011 Mustang GT.
- Engine options include dual throttle body and intakes or single throttle body and intake.
- Two new engines, Gen 4 and Gen 4X, are now up for pre-order, with control packs available this summer.
As part of Ford’s 60th anniversary Mustang celebrations, the company has just unveiled its newest generation of Coyote V8 crate engines and control packs, which start shipping out this summer. These Gen 4 engines can trace their lineage all the way back to the 2011 Mustang GT, but over the last decade, Ford has made serious improvements to ensure they can still run with the best of them. If it’s good enough for the brand’s top-of-the-line Dark Horse Mustang, then it’s perfect for your Fox Body build.

The company is releasing the engine in two configurations: dual throttle body and intakes and single throttle body and intake. The goal is to give the buyer flexibility, as the company understands you won’t always have the space necessary for the dual-throttle body engine.

One Engine, Two Flavors
Starting with the more potent of the two, you get the full-fat Gen 4 engine, which needs to be further specced as the manual transmission unit or the automatic transmission unit, so make up your mind before you buy. Featuring dual throttle body intakes with two 80 mm throttle bodies, the engine produces 480 horsepower at 7,150 rpm and 415 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm. The Gen4X engine is the smaller of the two but still potent enough for most appetites. Featuring a single throttle body intake and a single 80 mm throttle body, the engine produces 460 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm.

The benefit of this engine is that customers can either fit a manual flywheel or automatic flexplate themselves, allowing them to decide their configuration down the line from manual to automatic or vice versa if plans change. Ford Performance control packs to run the engines will be available this summer, with the Gen 4X unit needing its own unique pack to function. As for the power modules, Ford says that information will come at a later time. Both engines are currently available for pre-order, but Ford hasn’t announced pricing yet.
Ford Crate Engines Galore
These two engines join a host of other crate engines Ford has announced recently which includes the Aluminator and Megazilla engines. The Alumintor is essentially a close cousin to these Gen 4’s, as it’s also based on a Gen 4, but it’s been tuned and modified by Ford Performance. This means the addition of a forged steel crankshaft, Mahle Hard Anodized forged pistons with Grafal low friction coating, and Manley H-beam connecting rods with ARP 2000 bolts. Weighing about 529 pounds and costing $15,000, the engine is available in a naturally aspirated version or a version ready for forced induction, so it’s prepared to make a lot more power.
Still, it’s nothing compared to the 7.3-liter Megazilla V8, which finally went on sale late last year. Costing a whopping $22,995, the company says the engine produces 615 horsepower and 638 lb-ft of torque without the help of forced induction, meaning if you add a couple of turbochargers or a supercharger to this puppy, you’re looking at a frighteningly good time.
