The Philadelphia Flyers got absolutely no help in their quest to clinch the second wild card spot, with every result of their competitors’ Monday games only placing their playoff chances further out of reach.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to defeat the Nashville Predators in a fairly comfortable 4-2 win, while the Washington Capitals blanked the Boston Bruins to take a 2-0 win.
There was a glimmer of hope with how the Montreal Canadiens were leading the Detroit Red Wings, but the Red Wings were able to mount an epic comeback to force overtime and eventually seal a 5-4 win in OT.
So what does this mean for the Flyers’ chances?
They’re not out of the race by any means, and their objective for Tuesday against the Capitals hasn’t changed—they need a regulation win, plain and simple.
However, now they’ll need the Red Wings to lose in regulation to the Canadiens on Tuesday, along with needing the Penguins to lose in regulation to the New York Islanders on Wednesday.
Whichever team does manage to snag the second wild card spot will be going head to head with the Presidents’ Cup-winning New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs.
