Gardai have launched separate investigations after the Irish roads claimed two more lives on Wednesday.

A male motorcyclist died in Co Cork while a female cyclist lost her life in south Co Dublin.

Both collisions happened within minutes of each other, at around 8am, gardai said.

In the Cork incident, a man in his 40s died at the scene when his motorbike collided with a truck at Toureenfineen, close to the Cork/Kerry border.

The scene of the crash was sealed off all day on Wednesday as Garda forensic collision investigators began an investigation.

Gardaí in Mallow have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: “Gardaí are appealing to any person who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

“Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Mallow Garda station on 022 31450 the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

Meanwhile, around the same time a woman in her early 20s was killed after her bicycle was struck by a truck near Dun Laoghaire.

The collision happened at the junction of the Glenageary Road Upper, Mountown Road Lower and Kill Avenue.

A Garda spokesman said the victim was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

He added: ”Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dun Laoghaire Garda Station on 01 666 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

The fatalities bring to five the number of deaths on our roads since Sunday.

On that day, a motorcyclist in his 60s died in an incident at Banteer, County Cork.

And there were two deaths on Tuesday – a female driver in her 80s in Falcarragh, Co Donegal and a male motorcyclist in his 20s at White’s Cross in County Cork.
