Former Houston Rockets guard/forward Robert Reid has died at age 68, the team confirmed Tuesday.
Reid died at his home on Monday after a battle with cancer, according to the Houston Chronicle.
“The Fertitta Family and the Houston Rockets are deeply saddened by the passing of former player, Robert Reid, whose contributions were instrumental in guiding the Houston Rockets to their first two NBA Finals appearances in 1980-81 and 1985-86,” the Rockets said in a statement. “As a valued member of the Rockets family, Robert will be greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences and sympathies are extended to his wife, Diana, his children Robert Jr., Keva, Crystal, Jana, and all those who cherished him.”
Reid played 13 seasons in the NBA from 1977 to 1991, 10 of which came with the Rockets, the team that drafted him in the second round of the 1977 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-8, 205-pound Reid played his first five seasons in Houston, helping lead the Rockets to the franchise’s first NBA Finals appearance in the 1980-81 season, where they lost to Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics in six games, 4-2.
The San Antonio native did not play in the NBA during the 1982-83 season after retiring due to religious reasons. He returned the following season and played five more seasons with the Rockets from 1983 to 1988, again helping lead the Rockets to another Finals appearance in the 1985-86 season, where they again lost to the Celtics in six games.
After 10 seasons in Houston, Reid played one-plus seasons with the Charlotte Hornets before also having stints with the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers. He retired from the NBA after playing the 1990-91 NBA season with the 76ers.
For his career, Reid averaged 27.3 minutes, 11.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game in 919 games played, including 366 starts.
Reid currently ranks fourth in Rockets franchise history in games played (762), fifth in steals (881), eighth in both points (8,823) and rebounds (3,706), ninth in blocks (364) and 10th in assists (2,253).
