COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A $2 billion project including a new terminal has been announced for John Glenn International Airport. But when the White House awarded funding last week for aviation projects nationwide, Columbus wasn’t on the list.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $1 billion going toward 114 airports on Thursday, including several in Ohio.

“We are doing more to improve the travel experience than ever before, from expanding consumer protections to modernizing the physical infrastructure,” Buttigieg said. “These investments we’re announcing today, made possible by President Biden’s historic infrastructure package, will make it easier for passengers to get to and through airports, create jobs, and increase safety for all.”

Receiving money around the state were:

  • Lake County Executive Airport in Painesville ($2,665,957 requested)
  • Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland ($4,800,000 requested)
  • Gallia-Meigs Regional Airport in Gallipolis ($1,900,000 requested)
  • James M. Cox Dayton International Airport in Dayton ($2,952,900 requested)

The funding will go toward projects that include the reconstruction of terminal buildings at Lake County Executive and Gallia-Meigs Regional, the rehabilitation of a terminal building at Cleveland Hopkins International, and the first phase of the passenger boarding bridge project at Dayton International.

Data shows how the Ohio Amber Alert that ended with a 5-year-old being found dead is uncommon

But nothing was announced for John Glenn International.

In August, airport officials announced a fresh start for the airport in building a 36-gate terminal that would replace the existing facility, which opened in 1958 and has been expanded onto and renovated several times. It’d be built where the cellphone lot and Blue Lot for extending parking sit currently, making it possible to add an elevated walkway both to the rental car center that opened in 2021 and to a parking garage to be built on the site of the McDonald’s at 4250 International Gateway.

Officials predict the new terminal will open by 2029, with $250 million recently allocated toward the project and a dedicated website for construction updates launched. It included several renderings.

A representative of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority wasn’t immediately able to say whether it had applied for funds, instead emphasizing that it would apply during the next cycle.
