Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has stepped down as president of the Greek Super League.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has confirmed that he is stepping down as president of the Greek Super League, a role he has held since 2022.
The decision, which has been confirmed in a letter to the league’s board of directors, comes after the Greek government announced that matches will be played behind closed doors for two months.
The ban is an attempt to clamp down on violence after a police officer was severely injured in clashes during a volleyball match between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. Both Volleyball clubs are owned by the football teams of the same name, and the incident comes after previous examples of fan violence.
Marinakis, who also owns Olympiacos, has written a letter, via the BBC, to confirm his resignation from the Greek Super League role. “The words of certain board members are not consistent with their actions,” he wrote. “I’ve neither the time nor the desire to continue to be involved in the management of the league.”
It has been a busy time for the Forest owner, amid speculation over the future of manager Steve Cooper. The businessman was in the stands for last week’s 5-0 loss against Fulham, but the weekend’s battling 1-1 draw vs Wolves seems to have given the Forest boss more time to turn the season around.
Forest are back in action on Friday night when they take on Tottenham at the City Ground (8pm kick-off). Olympiacos, meanwhile will play their final Europa League group stage match behind closed doors when they take on Backa Topola on Thursday night., the Greek side are currently third in Group A, and are unable to catch Freiburg in second place meaning that they are likely to drop down into the Europa Conference League.
