'Time to start on the bucket list!' RTÉ's first female correspondent Eileen Magnier retires

Eileen Magnier is hanging up her boots, announcing her retirement from RTÉ after 39 years.

The Kilkenny-born journalist was appointed the national broadcaster’s North West correspondent in 1990, becoming its first female correspondent.

Now, it’s time for Eileen to get cracking on her bucket list as she’s decided to take early retirement, beginning in May- just months after her RTÉ News colleague Bryan Dobson announced he was retiring after 37 years.

Eileen shared the news on Wednesday, writing: ‘Time to pack up the RTÉ News mic and camera. I’ve decided to retire early and start on the bucket list!’

‘It’s been an honour to work as NW Corr for 34 years. Sincere thanks to all who shared their stories with me and my fantastic colleagues especially all those in the regions.’

Those who have followed Eileen as RTÉ’s NW correspondent over the past three decades took to social media to wish her all the best and a happy retirement.

One X user penned: ‘With best wishes Eileen and an assurance that there’s plenty to do in retirement! Hope you enjoyed your recent visit to Australia. Now is the time to travel!’

Another person wrote: ‘You will be missed. Congratulations on making a significant life choice for yourself. Enjoy the bucket list…’

Speaking further in a statement shared by RTÉ about her retirement, Eileen added: ‘The job of a regional correspondent is a unique and very important one and I am very proud to have been part of the RTÉ News team around the country.

‘It can be a tough job, emotionally draining, physically exhausting but also hugely satisfying and as a team, I know we all do our best to represent the people of the areas we cover in the true spirit of public service broadcasting.’
