This past weekend saw Notre Dame host some impressive recruits in both the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes. One player who does not currently hold an offer from the Irish who made the trip is 2026 Painesville (Ohio) Harvey running back Shahn Alston, who is one of the more gifted runners in the class.
With how well Notre Dame has been developing running backs over the last couple of years, it’s no surprise that some talented performers are very receptive to the program. Alston is included in that. Not only did the campus impress, but so did the thought of being a part of that room.
“The visit was great,” Alston told Irish Breakdown. “Some of my favorite parts were learning more about the school outside of football. There is a lot of tradition.
“Notre Dame is a tough program who can run the ball, which I like and can see myself fitting in,” he continued. “They also tend to rotate a few running backs which is good. With how running backs are being treated in the NFL, it’s good that these coaches try to keep them as fresh as possible and rotating guys is a great way to do so.”
A recurring theme of visitors this offseason is about the coaches, and just how much they clearly want the best for each player. The balance between being hard on the players and making them feel love is a hard one at times. Alston sees that from the Notre Dame coaches.
“You can tell the coaches care for the players,” Alston said. “I noticed that the coaches have great relationships with the players as well. They also pushed them to bring out their full potential and won’t allow them to get complacent.”
Alston did leave this visit without an official offer from the Irish. He is hopeful that one will be extended in the future, and it seems that the staff does have a good opinion of his game. He’s certainly a player to watch.
“They see me as a three down running back,” he explained. “Coach Deland McCullough wants me to continue working on quick burst/first step, but he loves my physicality and that I’m a downhill runner.”
Alston is currently rated as a four-star recruit on both the On3 and On3 Industry ranking. On3 has him pegged as the No. 75 overall player and No. 6 running back in the 2026 recruiting class. He is also ranked as the No. 3 player in the state of Ohio.
The talented running has been receiving interest from a long list of impressive programs so far. Some of Alston’s top offers include USC, Missouri, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Purdue and Cincinnati among others.
As a sophomore, Alston put together a tremendous season for the Red Raiders. He rushed for 1,042 yards and 15 touchdowns in just 128 carries, averaging an outrageous 8.1 yards per carry. Alston also hauled in four receptions for 82 yards and another score as a pass receiver.
