When Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell took over as general manager and head coach of the Detroit Lions in 2021, one of their first free agent acquisitions was Alex Anzalone.
Having played with the New Orleans Saints while Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn were on staff gave Anzalone some comfort on a one-year contract.
After a strong first season, he was rewarded with another one-year deal. When he made good on that deal in 2022, he earned stability with a three-year contract.
Appearing on ‘The Colin Thompson Show’ recently, Anzalone explained why he desires to remain with the organization on the heels of a historic 2023 campaign.
“So I played on two, back-to-back, one-year deals,” Anzalone explained. “When I signed my three-year deal last year, I thought going through free agency, I have other offers, (but) there’s not many places where you can leave a real legacy. Alex Anzalone can leave a legacy here. If you go to the 49ers and the Cowboys and even the Eagles, there’s Super Bowl teams before that. But in Detroit, obviously, they’ve struggled for a while. It’s somewhere where you can legitimately have a legacy and always go back to and be proud of time there depending on what we do and what we did this past year.”
The Lions have added several key pieces to their roster over the last two seasons and are now viewed as contenders. As a result, it has fueled Anzalone and the rest of the roster to continue building what they hope will be a championship team in 2024.
“The storyline’s cool. Dan’s awesome, and everyone kind of knows him now in America and knows what he’s about and who he is,” Anzalone said. “But the players we have, we obviously have All-Pro, Pro Bowl players. But they’re not superstars, those types of flashy players. It’s cool and the most exciting part is, moving forward, the pieces that we’ve been missing, … we’ve won and we’re starting to get into that space of, we’re starting to fill all the pieces that we need and we’re going for depth. As a player, that’s the most exciting part.”
