Delhi education department issues heatwave guidelines for schools. Details here

Amid rising temperatures, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff in schools. With strict instructions issued to both government and private institutions, a comprehensive set of guidelines has been put forth to combat the challenges posed by the impending heat wave. These directives, totalling nine, encompass various aspects aimed at maintaining a conducive environment for learning while safeguarding against the adverse effects of extreme heat.

Outlined by the Directorate of Education, the following nine instructions are to be meticulously adhered to by all educational institutions:

2. Discontinuation of afternoon assemblies: During the scorching afternoon hours, schools are instructed to suspend assemblies, minimising students’ exposure to the intense heat.

3. No open-air classes: Outdoor classes are to be halted to shield students from direct sunlight and oppressive heat.

4. Limitation of outdoor activities: When a heat wave is declared, schools must refrain from organising any outdoor activities to prevent students from overexertion in extreme weather conditions.

5. Accessible drinking water: Schools are obligated to ensure the availability of clean drinking water at all times, with a particular emphasis on the proper functioning of water purification systems.

6. Scheduled water breaks: To prevent dehydration, students should be granted regular water breaks during class hours.

7. Parental awareness campaign: Parents are to be sensitised through School Management Committee (SMC) members about the importance of ensuring their children cover their heads with umbrellas, hats, caps, towels, or other traditional headgear when exposed to direct sunlight.

These directives underscore the Education Department’s commitment to prioritising student welfare and safety amidst the challenging weather conditions. By implementing these measures, schools aim to mitigate the risks associated with heat waves and ensure a conducive learning environment for all students.
