NEW DELHI: As the electoral fervor grips Betul, the Election Commission’s announcement on March 16 has set the stage for a high-stakes battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Scheduled for April 26, the polls in Betul constituency are poised to witness a showdown between candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress, with Durga Das Uikey and Ramu Tekam leading their respective parties.
The Betul parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh is marked by fierce electoral competition between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC), addressing a wide spectrum of issues from agriculture to healthcare. BJP’s stronghold is evident through the consistent victories of candidates like Durga Das Uikey, Jyoti Dhurve, and Vijay Kumar Khandelwal (commonly known as Munni Bhaiya). However, in 2009, INC’s Ramu Tekam emerged victorious, showcasing the constituency’s political dynamism. Despite BJP’s dominance, INC has demonstrated resilience, reflecting the constituency’s diverse and evolving political landscape.
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, Betul witnessed robust electoral participation, with a total of 1,737,437 electors. Durga Das Uikey of the BJP secured victory with 811,248 votes, while INC’s Ramu Tekam trailed behind with 451,007 votes, marking a margin of 360,241 votes.
Similarly, in the 2014 elections, amidst a total electorate of 1,607,831, Jyoti Dhurve of the BJP emerged victorious with 643,651 votes, showcasing the party’s dominance. INC’s Ajay Shah “Makrai” secured 315,037 votes, losing by a significant margin of 328,614 votes.
In 2009, Betul witnessed a shift in electoral outcomes, with Jyoti Dhurve retaining the seat for the BJP with 334,939 votes. However, INC’s Ojharam Evane put up a strong competition, securing 237,622 votes and narrowing the margin to 97,317 votes.
In 2004, Vijay Kumar Khandelwal (Munni Bhaiya) secured victory for the BJP with 288,007 votes, maintaining the party’s stronghold. Rajendra Jaiswal of INC trailed behind with 130,467 votes, losing by 157,540 votes.
Similarly, in 1999, Vijay Kumar Khandelwal (Munni Bhaiya) emerged victorious with 272,512 votes, defeating INC’s Gufran Bhai by 64,472 votes, showcasing the BJP’s dominance in the constituency.
In 1998, Vijay Kumar Khandelwal (Munni Bhaiya) retained the seat with 284,091 votes, while INC’s Dr. Ashok Sable secured 244,425 votes, losing by 39,666 votes.
In 1996, Vijay Kumar Khandelwal secured victory for the BJP with 260,259 votes, while Aslam Sherkhan of INC trailed behind with 148,183 votes, losing by 112,076 votes.
The electoral history of the Betul parliamentary constituency underscores the BJP’s stronghold, with occasional victories by the INC, reflecting the constituency’s dynamic political landscape.
