The Pittsburgh Steelers hoped when they took Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft that they were getting their next franchise quarterback.
However, Pickett’s first two pro seasons have been a bumpy ride, leaving his future in the Steel City up for debate. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin has already said that Pickett is still QB1, but will face competition for the job this offseason.
According to the latest intel from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler though, it does seem like Pickett is likely to get one more season to prove himself as the starter before the Steelers either commit to him or send him packing.
“Even as they sort out their quarterback outlook, the Steelers have started the process of rebuilding third-year passer Kenny Pickett. I’m told new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith recently spent time with Pickett in South Florida and that the two had a “great” meeting,” Fowler wrote Sunday.
“The sentiment among many here in Indy — including some with the team — was that Pickett could get another chance after a disastrous 2023 season due in part to the offense’s overall struggles under then-OC Matt Canada. Smith should help maximize Pickett’s skill set.”
In 25 NFL games (24 starts), Pickett has thrown for only 4,474 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
His production must increase this fall if he wants to remain with Pittsburgh long-term.
