As of 2024, the Texas Longhorns will no longer be taking trips to Lubbock or Stillwater. They will instead be taking trips to Gainesville and eventually Athens. Following the latest wave of conference realignment, which Texas and Oklahoma got started, the Longhorns will now be in the SEC starting next season.
Part of their “welcome to the SEC slate” entails hosting a Georgia team that will likely be a top-three team in the country a week after they play Oklahoma. A matchup with the Bulldogs that ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg believes has major Heisman implications between the two quarterbacks that will be taking the field.

Texas returns Quinn Ewers who will be starting for his third season, while Georgia will be returning Carson Beck who will be starting for a second year. They are both viewed as two of the best quarterbacks in the country and are expected to have a say in who wins the Heisman.
“Texas seems as prepared for entry into the SEC as a team could possibly be, after reaching its first CFP, beating Alabama on the road last year and taking the Tide to the brink in 2022 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium,” Rittenberg wrote. “The Carson Beck-Quinn Ewers quarterback matchup could carry Heisman Trophy implications.”
On top of having Heisman implications, there is also a large chance that this game somewhat decides the SEC and more importantly; the College Football Playoff. With the playoff expanding to 12 teams, the conference titles have never been more important. Win the conference and you are automatically in, whereas missing out on the title means you’ll need to battle for an at-large bid.
Texas fans are hoping to see Ewers take another step forward after he already improved in a major way from year one to year two.
