The UK is full of ridiculously beautiful beaches but there’s one sandy shore that’s often overlooked – meaning you can enjoy the wide stretch of shore without the crowds.
Brancaster Beach in Norfolk was recently named one of the UK’s best beaches by Parkdean Resorts, which ranked coastal spots across a number of factors including the average temperature, number of rainy days and daylight hours of beaches across the UK. Considering Brancaster prides itself on being one of the driest regions in Britain, it’s no surprise that its beach made the cut.
The bay is popular with both locals and visitors as it offers plenty of space for walks, it’s dog-friendly and the sparkling waters can be ideal for the likes of sailing or kite surfing on windier days. The Parkdean Resorts team explained: “Made for serene spring strolls, Brancaster is the perfect place if you’re looking to explore over the next few months, rain or shine.”
The beach is actually part of the Brancaster Estate, a National Trust site, and features a few facilities such as a car par and toilets (the latter can be tide dependent but there are also loos at the Brancaster Staithe harbour nearby).

One quirky feature for history buffs to look out for is the shipwreck of the SS Vina, which can become visible at low tide. According to UK Beach Guide, “the ship was used as target practice by the RAF during World War II but became stuck on a sandbank”. Although it’s a very cool sight to enjoy, it’s definitely one to admire from afar – attempting to walk out to the wreck is considered dangerous.
Over on Tripadvisor, tourists have left some glowing reviews about the beach and the lack of crowds. One person who visited in summer last year said: “An amazing beach with the added bonus of very people. Wide open space as far as the eye can see. Particularly amazing at low tide. Parking is a bit expensive £7 for 2 hours but on balance worth it.”
Another added: “Beautiful sandy beach on the North Norfolk coast. Clear blue and cool water and sandy shore make for an ideal day out with family or friends especially in warm weather. Short drive from Hunstanton and King’s Lynn. Parking is nearby with plenty of spaces. Just check for the tides before visiting as the beach becomes unreachable when there is high tide.”
Once you’re done enjoying the beach, there’s plenty to explore in the surrounding area. Brancaster Staithe Harbour is a particular highlight. The former Roman town is home to plenty of sailing boats and fishing vessels, and boasts a small Crab Hut as well as an ice cream van, although there are plenty of picnic spots if you want to stop for a spot of lunch.
The National Trust adds: “Parking is free but the harbour does get very busy around high tide, with boats launching and recovering, so we ask that visitors time their visit accordingly. The harbour starts to get busy from 2 hours before high tide and then for the following 2 hours after high tide”.
