Drinkers have been hit with yet another blow as pints of Bulmers and Tennent’s are to increase across the country at the end of April.

The move by owners C&C Group plc follows the six cent hike by Diageo for pints of Guinness, Carlsberg and Smithwicks which came into effect nationwide last Monday.

Most publicans are now increasing the price of a pint by between 10 and 30 cent for draught beers and a pint of lager has now hit six euros in many pubs.

Bar owners were informed by Bulmers about their latest price hike in the past few days.

They are expecting the increase to be around three percent for pints and bottles of Bulmers will see the price increase by more than 20 cent.

A big one litre bottle of Bulmers currently retails at approximately €6.50 a bottle.

It is understood the increase will apply to all C&C bottled beers. They also own Tennnent’s draught.

The price hike will take effect from April 30.

Bulmers sales reps have told publicans they will be receiving letters on the proposed increase in the coming days.

The whole industry is now waiting to see if the other big brand leader, Heineken, will follow Diageo and C&C.

One publican wrote on a bar owners’ chat site: “Our trade is difficult enough in the current climate but this is going to really hit a lot of rural pubs who couldn’t possibly afford to take the hit on this increase on top of all the other cost increases.”
