Just days after panic began to seep back into the minds of Ohio State fans following the departure of the newly hired Bill O’Brien, the Buckeyes went out and landed a new offensive coordinator.
Their new higher also may have been a splashier higher than O’Brien’s, as they were able to lure UCLA head coach Chip Kelly away from Westwood. While things didn’t necessarily go very well for the Bruins during Kelly’s tenure, he is still renowned for being one of the best offensive minds in college football.
A major reason that ESPN analyst Greg McElroy raved about the hire on a recent episode of Always College Football.
“The fact that they were able [Ohio State] to go out and get Chip Kelly and I think too think about that roster. Think about what they’ve built in the transfer portal,” said McElroy. “Quinshon Judkins, TreVeyon Henderson, what more do you need? And to think too that UCLA led the Pac-12 in rushing yards per game in each of the last two seasons…”
He continued, explaining that Kelly would be able to get extremely creative with the aforementioned duo, which will only help the offense thrive when it’s mixed with what Ryan Day has already implemented.
The Buckeyes are looking to end their Big Ten title and College Football Playoff drought, and if they can, it will certainly be in part due to Kelly’s hiring. If they can get consistent quarterback play out of Will Howard or one of the star freshmen, this offense will be firing on all cylinders.
