Manchester United staggered into the FA Cup final after a fortunate win against Championship side Coventry, with Roy Keane admitting Erik ten Hag’s players looked embarrassed as they claimed a victory in a penalty shoot-out.
Erik ten Hag’s United survived an almighty scare after Coventry fell agonisingly short of a sensational comeback win at Wembley.
Sky Blues captain Ben Sheaf sent the crucial kick over the crossbar leaving Rasmus Hojlund to win it, but the game will be remembered for three goals in the final 20 minutes by the Championship side as they recovered from 3-0 down to force extra-time.
Coventry thought they had secured a stunning win when Victor Torp turned Wright’s cross into the net in the final minute of extra time before Coventry’s brief joy was extinguished a VAR review for offside.
A stunning cup tie was ultimately settled by penalties, Sheaf firing into the United fans as Coventry fell short by a whisker.
Most of the Ten Hag’s players were muted in their celebrations after their second half collapse at Wembley, with former United captain Roy Keane offering a withering verdict on their performance..
“Whenever I see this United team I don’t like what I see. Talk about leadership and characters, I don’t see that in this United team. My goodness, they rode their luck today,” Keane told ITV Sport.
“We’re having the same conversation every week with Man United, you don’t know what you’re going to get.
“Manchester United play in moments, they always give you chances. We’ve seen it already in the FA Cup this season with the games against Wigan and Newport County.
“(Harry) Maguire said he saw character but I don’t see character. I’m almost getting to the point where I don’t like them.
“I’m seeing bad habits. The goalkeeper is wasting time at 2-0 up, get on with the game and go and flex your muscles.
“They’ll be celebrating getting to a cup final but all this does is put more pressure on the manager. Huge problems for Man United going forward but they got the job done.”
United manager Ten Hag admitted his relief at the end of the match covered up what could been a disastrous afternoon if Coventry’s extra-time goal was allowed to stand.
