Mini Deli is closing this week after 46 years.
An Upper East Side staple is closing after almost 50 years. Mini Deli, known for its Italian sandwiches and espresso, will close this week at 1266 Second Avenue, between East 66th and 67th Streets, according to the website Upper East Site. The business has been open at that address since 1978.
Owner Pino Cinquemani, who took over more than 35 years ago, attributed the closure to several factors, including the pandemic and changing demographics in Lenox Hill. neighborhood. “It used to be more family-oriented,” Cinquemani says. “Now it’s a bunch of young kids staying in an apartment, one on top of each other.”
World’s 50 Best releases annual bar ranking
The World’s 50 Best Bars List was announced on Tuesday at a ceremony in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Twelve of the 50 winners are from the United States. They include Superbueno in second place, a Mexican cocktail bar in the East Village; Overstory in third place, from the owners of the Michelin-starred restaurant Crown Shy; and Martiny’s in fourth place, run by an alum of Angel’s Share.
Michelin ranks hotels — with 27 in New York
In the fall, Michelin announced that it would begin ranking hotels — using keys, instead of stars, to evaluate venues. The awards, announced today, include 124 hotels around the world and 27 in New York. Four, including Aman, Casa Cipriani, the Crosby Street Hotel, and the Whitby Hotel, took the top honor. The rankings are based on five criteria: local character, individuality, architecture and design, service and comfort, and consistent value.
Tenement Museum to resume food tours
After a five-year break, the Tenement Museum will once again offer food tours of the Lower East Side. The 90-minute walking tour will take visitors to five food vendors in lower Manhattan, including Cafe Katja, an Austrian restaurant; Que Chevere, serving Puerto Rican tostones; and Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, inside the Essex Market. Tickets are available online for $55 per person.
