Adam Schefter recently explained JJ McCarthy’s recent popularity on NFL draft boards ahead of this month’s event.
Schefter went as far to predict when McCarthy will be drafted when talking with WXYZ Detroit’s Brad Galli in a recent interview. The NFL insider believes fans will be seeing McCarthy’s name called earlier than imagined.
“Well, I think he’s jumping up draft boards,” Schefter said. “I think he’s gonna be picked somewhere between say 2-3 or 11 and 12, somewhere in that range and he’s gonna be a 1st round pick.”
Teams are starting to like what they see out of the former Michigan quarterback. Schefter further explained what makes McCarthy stand out compared to some of the other QBs in the class. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and Michael Penix Jr. are just some of the names at quarterback.
“You’ve got to know JJ a little bit. First of all, he’s an A+ person. Just upbeat, positive, leader, someone you want to be around. Number 2 he’s accurate, he’s mobile, he’s gifted, he’s talented,” Schefter said. “He’s got the skills you’re looking for. He’s young, he’s gonna continue to get better and grow. Quarterbacks are hard to find, but I think the league feels like it’s found one in JJ McCarthy and let’s see who picks him and gives him a chance to succeed at the next level.”
Schefter is hoping that his prediction comes true. Especially because he made a bet with some of his Michigan friends in December that McCarthy would go in the 1st round. It’s starting to look like Schefter’s friend might have to honor that bet this offseason.
“I would say that I’m very happy about that. Me and some of my Michigan buddies were on a text chain back in December,” Schefter said. “I bet one of my friends dinner for the entire group that McCarthy would be a 1st-round pick. He insisted he wouldn’t be. I feel like I had insider information there. Our friend is gonna owe our entire group of Michigan friends dinner at some point this spring.”
The 2024 NFL Draft kicks off on April 25 in Detroit, Michigan. It’ll be anyone’s guess where McCarthy ends up.
