The news comes two years after a scandal over a plan to appoint Dr Holohan to the university on secondment, at the expense of the taxpayer.

The senior medical professional, who also took up a new HSE consultancy job at the start of 2024, revealed his new venture on Thursday, saying that it was an ‘honour’ for him to announce his new role.

‘It is an honour for me to announce that I have been awarded an Adjunct Professor title in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin (TCD). I am looking forward to working with colleagues in the School of Medicine,’ he said.
Dr Holohan also has an adjunct professor title at University College Dublin (UCD) and is a non-executive board member of the Irish Hospice Foundation.
In addition, he is the director of the Centre for One Health at UCD – an organisation dedicated to advancing research and education into global health challenges.
In January of this year, Dr Holohan was appointed chair of FutureNeuro at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Its aim is to develop new technologies and solutions for neurological diseases.
In 2022, there was political controversy after it emerged Dr Holohan was due to take up a secondment to the role of professor of public health strategy and leadership at TCD.
The controversy was due to the post being an open-ended secondment, funded by the Department of Health via the Health Research Board. It also emerged that the post, not put to open competition, was created with Dr Holohan in mind.

However, it collapsed after political misgivings emerged about how it had come to pass, and Dr Holohan instead decided to retire from the public service.
A review of the secondment was carried out in 2022 and published by the Department of Health.

The report by Dr Maura Quinn found the former CMO ‘should not have been exclusively personally involved in the negotiation of research funding linked to [the secondment]’.
The report said the funding commitment of €2 million a year ‘by-passed all acceptable protocols.’
