5/6 Gamethread: Giants @ Phillies
5/6 Gamethread: Giants @ Phillies
After three losses that were three varying levels of disappointing, the San Francisco Giants will look to salvage a win as they finish off their four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Personally, I hope they succeed.
First, some injury news: catcher Tom Murphy will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks, Bob Melvin announced. And Blake Snell will throw a bullpen session tomorrow.
It’s an exciting game for the Giants, as right-handed pitcher Mason Black will get the start and make his MLB debut. Black, one of the top prospects in the system, has been lights out in AAA Sacramento this year, with a 1.01 ERA, a 3.30 FIP, and 29 strikeouts to eight walks in 26.2 innings. He was added to the roster earlier today, while right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies was designated for assignment.
While the Giants are starting a current top prospect, the Phillies are starting a former top Giants prospect. Yes, it’s All-Star righty Zack Wheeler on the mound for Philly. In seven starts this year, Wheeler is 3-3 with a 1.91 ERA, a 2.61 FIP, and 52 strikeouts to 12 walks in 42.1 innings. He has given up just one run in his last three starts combined.
The Giants have their work cut out for them. Get it done, fellas!
