49ers Owner Doesn't Hold Back On Brock Purdy's Future Contract

The San Francisco 49ers have been able to keep their talented roster together with savvy contract decisions and by having the lowest-paid starting quarterback in the league in Brock Purdy.

Purdy has two more years remaining on his current deal, and he’s set to make $985,000 and $1.1 million. If he continues to play well, he’ll be in line for a much bigger deal in just a matter of time.

That’s no problem at all for 49ers owner Jed York, who says he’s ready to give Purdy a big extension.

“It’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league,” York said at the NFL’s owner meetings in Orlando this week.

“It’s what the market is. Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before,” the owner continued. “I don’t know how many players are making over $40 million (per year) as a quarterback right now.”

After Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson reset the quarterback market before the 2023 season, the answer is only a handful of players.

As York alluded to, quarterbacks are often the most important players on their teams, so it makes sense that they’d take up such a large percentage of a team’s salary cap.

Purdy has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and the NFC Championship game in back-to-back seasons, and it’s clear he has the support of his teammates, coaching staff and the front office.

If he can follow up 2022 and 2023 with another great season in 2024, Purdy will go from “Mr. Irrelevant” to “Mr. Wealthy” very soon.
