Lyra on the Late Late Show
Viewers of tonight’s Late Late Show fell in love with “gas” singer Lyra, who had her fellow guests in stitches with her unmistakable Cork sense of humour following a stunning performance of a song from her new album.
One fan on social media branded her the “Bandon Béyonce”, while another simply declared: “We must protect Lyra at all costs! What a gas woman.”
She began her interview with Patrick Kielty by likening herself to David Beckham, joking that the similarity was “because we look the same in Calvin Klein underwear – I bloody wish!”
Instead, she explained that people are often surprised when she speaks in a strong Cork accent that sounds nothing like the powerful singing voice used in her performance.
“You can see people going ‘What in the name of God is going on here?’” she laughed.
“I’m having a David Beckham moment,” she explains. “I don’t look and sound the same.”
Speaking about her new album, titled ‘Lyra’, the singer acknowledged that a number of the tracks were about her ex-boyfriend, who she hasn’t spoken to since he dumped her over the phone.
She told Patrick Kielty that there were a number of songs that were risqué, and she didn’t want her dad listening to them.
“Track two and 10 – I’m like, skip them,” she said. “They’re a bit wild.”
The host complimented her on her look as she wore an extravagant gold outfit that looked like it might be borrowed from the wardrobe of Lady Gaga. He asked if she dressed like that on a day-to-day basis.
“Can you imagine me down in Dealz getting my Christmas decorations? Howya, no!” she replied.
Her fellow guest, author Marian Keyes, was so impressed with Lyra that she interjected to say: “I just wish I was you.”
“It’s hard work getting into [the outfits],” Lyra continued. “I’d be bate into them. There’s about three sucky-in knickers underneath there and literally the boob tape doesn’t work anymore.
“It is sore, it is so sore, you’d have scrapes and marks all down you, it’s not for the fainthearted. But it’s so much fun,” she said.
The singer also complained about the weight of her wig, compared it to swinging a kettlebell around her neck, and said she needed a chiropractor after one performance.
Viewers on social media were extremely impressed with her interview.
“Lyra is a breath of fresh air – never change,” wrote one person.
“How bleedin’ fabulous is Lyra?” another one asked.
“Who is this Lyra girl on the Late Late Show? She’s gas,” wrote a new fan.
The other guests on tonight’s show were TV personality Paddy McGuinness, Marian Keyes, and rugby player Jordan Conroy.
