‘Explain the decision-making process’ – Ali Bacher seeks clarification from CSA on the Teeger case

Cricket supremo Ali Bacher has asked Cricket South Africa (CSA) to provide “a comprehensive explanation of the decision-making” that led to the removal of David Teeger as Under-19 captain ahead of the U-19s Cricket World Cup.

CSA stripped Teeger of his captaincy over his pro-Israeli stance. He caused a furore when he dedicated his award to the soldiers in Israel during the 2023 Absa Jewish Achiever Rising Star Awards.

ALI BACHER SEEKS CLARIFICATION FROM CSA ON THE TEEGER CASE

CSA stripped him of captaincy, citing the fears of in-tournament protest against Teeger. Ali Bacher is unconvinced with the decision-making process that influenced the decision.

According to Bacher, CSA’s failure to justify its decision casts doubt on the board’s explanation of security concerns. The SAJBD said CSA’s security concern reports are “trumped up and bogus” because of their contradictory responses.

His intervention comes after the CSA met with South African Jewish Board Deputies (SAJBD) ahead of the tournament. However, Bacher has asked for “transparent and open discourse” on the matter.

Reports have it that he specifically asked CSA to disclose:

  • The security reports that influenced this decision.
  • A comprehensive explanation of the decision-making process.
  • The specific factors and insights that led to the removal of the captaincy.
  • Clarification on whether any external pressures were placed on them that led to the decision.

CAREER

Teeger debuted in competitive top-flight cricket during the 2023 CSA One-Day Cup. Teeger made his List A debut on 28 September 2023, playing for South Africa’s Emerging Players side against North Cape in the 2023 CSA One-Day Cup.

In 2023, he was the South Africa national Under-19 cricket team captain. Ahead of the 2024 U-19 Cricket World Cup, the CSA relieved him of his duty.
