77 days till patriots season opener: every player to wear no. 77 for new england

The New England Patriots will open their 2024 campaign against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium on Sunday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. ET, which is now 77 days away.

Until the opening kickoff of the season for the Patriots, we'll be counting down each day by looking back at those who have worn each specific jersey number.

Since 1960, 12 players have worn No. 77 in New England, and with 77 days until their first game of the year, here's a look at everyone who's worn the number for the team:

OT Trent Brown: 2018-23

Brown was drafted in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL draft out of Florida by the San Francisco 49ers. He was traded to New England in 2018 and helped them win a Super Bowl, but he left to sign a big deal with the Oakland Raiders in 2019.

In 2021, Brown was traded back to the Patriots and spent more seasons with them before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals this past offseason.

He appeared in 53 games for the Patriots over his four seasons.

DE Michael Bennett: 2019

Bennett was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks after playing at Texas A&M. He spent his first nine seasons between Seattle and Tampa Bay, winning a Super Bowl and making three Pro Bowls.

After a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, Bennett joined the Patriots in 2019 but was traded midway through the year to the Dallas Cowboys.

He played just six games for New England in 2019, recording five tackles and 2.5 sacks.

OT Nate Solder: 2011-17

The Patriots drafted Solder in the first round of the 2011 draft out of Colorado. He played in 98 games for New England, helping the team win two Super Bowls before spending his final three seasons with the New York Giants.

OT Nick Kaczur: 2005-09

New England selected Kaczur in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft out of Toledo. He appeared in 68 games for the Patriots over his five seasons before a back injury essentially ended his career.

OL Mike Compton: 2001-03

The Lions originally drafted Compton in the third round of the 1993 draft out of West Virginia. Compton spent eight seasons with the Lions before joining the Patriots. He appeared in 34 games for New England over three seasons, helping them win two Super Bowls. He ended his season with a single year with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

OT Greg Randall: 2000

New England drafted Randall in the fourth round of the 2000 draft. He appeared in 35 games for the Patriots over three seasons, helping them win a Super Bowl before finishing up his career with one year playing for the Houston Texans.

OT Zefross Moss: 1997-99

Moss went undrafted in 1988 out of Alabama State and signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He spent six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and two with the Detroit Lions before joining the Patriots and appearing in 42 games over his final NFL three seasons.

OT Pat Harlow: 1991-95

Harlow was New England's first-round pick in 1991 out of USC. He appeared in 74 games for the Patriots over five seasons before joining the Oakland Raiders for his final three years.

DE Kenneth Sims: 1982-89

Sims was the first overall pick in the 1982 draft out of Texas. He played in 74 games for New England over eight seasons, recording 17 sacks and five fumbles recovered. Injuries and legal trouble led to his early retirement.

OL Garry Puetz: 1979-81

The New York Jets selected Puetz in the 12th round of the 1973 draft out of Valparaiso. He bounced around the Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles in his first seven seasons. He then joined the Patriots and appeared in 36 games for the team over three years before finishing his career with one year with Washington.

OT Tom Neville: 1965-77

Neville was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 1965 AFL draft out of Mississippi State. He played in 160 games for the team over 12 years before wrapping up his career with one year with the Denver Broncos and another with the New York Giants.

OL Bobby Cross: 1960

The Chicago Bears drafted Cross in the ninth round of the 1952 draft out of Stephen F. Austin State. He played for the Bears, 49ers, Cardinals and Cowboys in the NFL as well as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. He joined the Patriots for his lone season in the AFL and played four games for the team.
