Uefa will make a decision on closing the roof of Frankfurt’s Waldstadion on the day of England’s match against Denmark after fears rain could impact the Group C game.

Lightning has been forecast for a fixture which offers Gareth Southgate’s team a chance to seal a place in the knockout stages of the European Championship. Georgia’s defeat by Turkey in Dortmund was hit by torrential rain on Tuesday evening.

Denmark trained with the roof closed on the eve of the match, while England chose to train at their Blankenhain base rather than Eintracht Frankfurt’s ground.

German newspaper Bild quoted meteorologist Dominik Jung saying the closures were necessary and that there had even been a potential “risk to life”.

“There is a risk to life,” he told the publication. “We don’t currently know every place that could get hit, but we do know the region where something could happen. People will complain again: ‘We didn’t have anything.’ But better safe than sorry.”

England have not played at the stadium since their victory over Paraguay at the 2006 World Cup. Should they defeat Denmark, it would be the first time England have won their first two matches at a European Championship.

“Winning matches in tournaments is incredibly hard. In this tournament you’ve now got incredible support for all the teams in the stadiums as well, which is a little different to the last two tournaments,” said Southgate.

“We’ve had some good results over the years so maybe even we take results for granted, I should let the boys enjoy it more than they do. I hope they have a little bit longer than me!

“There should be more joy in it but it’s not my reality if I’m frank. My focus is to get qualified from the group, two tough opponents and two games to achieve that.”
