Vikings get C- offseason grade from ESPN
With training camp just over a month a way, offseason reviews are starting to trickle in and the Minnesota Vikings aren't near the top of the class.
ESPN's Seth Walder released his offseason review of each team on Tuesday and gave the Vikings a C-, worse than all but three teams.
Was it really that bad?
Sure, the team started a new chapter, moving on from key veterans in QB Kirk Cousins and edge rusher Danielle Hunter.
Minnesota replaced Cousins in the short-term with Sam Darnold and drafted J.J. McCarthy, a somewhat divisive prospect, as his apparent long-term replacement while adding several other free agents, particularly on defense.
But it wasn't those moves that Walder was against, and he actually said he "loved" the signing of edge rusher Jonathan Greenard to replace Hunter at a cheaper number.
He also was a fan of the extension signed by superstar WR Justin Jefferson, noting that while the average annual cost "comes with a little sticker shock," it certainly could have been even higher.
Walder, however, believes the Vikings made poor moves that cost them a lot of draft capital, particularly in the trades that led up to the Dallas Turner selection.
By itself, Walder wasn't a fan of the trade that moved the Vikings from pick No. 23 to 17 for Turner, but factoring in the trade with Houston before the draft that got Minnesota the No. 23 pick in the first place was "an overwhelming price to pay," according to Walder.
He also cited OverTheCap's report that projects the Vikings lost out on another third-round compensatory pick next year because of the signing of CB Shaquill Griffin.
Even though the initial trade with Houston was likely part of a plan to jump up even higher in the draft to get a quarterback, and even if Turner ends up being a stud, it's fair to think the Vikings lost some value and could've possibly ended up with even more.
Still, is that enough justification for a C- grade? What do you think, Vikings fans?
