UEFA open Serbia 'disciplinary proceedings' after England clash as Scotland star banned

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against the Serbian FA after their 1-0 defeat to England.

The Three Lions won on Sunday evening thanks to Jude Bellingham's early header. Away from the pitch, UEFA have taken action following a couple of incidents.

A statement from UEFA on Monday read: "Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated in accordance with Article 55 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) following the UEFA European Championship group stage match between Serbia and England (0-1) played on 16 June 2024 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

"Charges against Football Association of Serbia (FSS): Throwing of objects, Art. 16(2)(b) DR, Transmitting a provocative message unfit for a sports event, Art. 16(2)(e) DR.

"The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will decide on the matter in due course. Furthermore, an UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding alleged discriminatory behaviour."

UEFA's intervention comes after violent clashes between Serbian and English fans in Germany. Bottles, chairs and tables were hurled into the air by rival groups outside a bar in Gelsenkirchen.

A German police spokesman said: "There was a confrontation between Serbian and English football fans in the city of Gelsenkirchen. The two fan groups were separated. Seven people were taken into custody. There was also a complaint of grievous bodily harm. The background to this is still unclear."

Back to the football, Serbia opened their Euros campaign with a slender defeat to Gareth Southgate's England. Serbia are next in action against Slovenia before rounding off their group stage against Denmark.

UEFA have also announced that Scotland star Ryan Porteous has been hit with a two-game ban for his red card. The defender was sent off in Scotland's opening Euro 2024 game against Germany.

Steve Clarke's side were 2-0 down at the time ahead of the Watford star's crunching challenge on Ilkay Gundogan. VAR intervened to award a penalty that was scored by Kai Havertz.

Porteous' tournament could now be over should Scotland fail to qualify from the group. A statement confirmed that they would "suspend Scottish Football Association player, Mr Ryan Porteous, for a total of two (2) UEFA representative team competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible, for serious rough play".

They also announced that they would fine the Scottish Football Association €5,625 for throwing of objects during Friday's 5-1 defeat to Germany. Scotland will be aiming to earn their first victory of the tournament against Switzerland before taking on Hungary.
