Austria star admits disappointment in message to Kylian Mbappe after he breaks his nose
Austria defender Kevin Danso has publicly apologised to Kylian Mbappe after breaking his nose in France's Euro 2024 win on Monday night.
The Real Madrid star is a doubt for Les Bleus’ clash against the Netherlands on Friday evening despite initial examinations suggesting he will not require surgery.
Mbappe sustained the injury after colliding with Danso’s shoulder late in the 1-0 win and was taken to hospital afterwards. He will now be fitted with a special mask for the rest of the tournament. France conclude their Group D campaign against Poland next Tuesday.
In a post on X, Danso wrote: "To French supporters: I am disappointed that Kylian Mbappe was injured in our match. I want him to have a speedy recovery and I hope he gets back on the field quickly."
Regarding the match, Danso said: “It was a great fight, unfortunately with an unfortunate outcome for us. Nevertheless, I am very proud of our team, our fans and of my European Championship debut. Thank you all for your incredible support in this stadium in Dusseldorf, which is still a special place for me.”
Mbappe will get fresh treatment at the country’s training base later today and there is no suggestion that he has sustained a concussion.
The France Football Federation said via a statement in the early hours of Tuesday morning: “Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team.

"Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France held this Monday in Dusseldorf. The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture. Mbappe will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future.
“A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment."
