Todd Howard Has Big Plans for Future Starfield DLC

Bethesda director Todd Howard has some big hopes and dreams for Starfield DLC, as he hopes new expansions can make the RPG’s weak points a bit better. So far, we’ve had small DLC packs that add new missions and some extra miscellany, but Shattered Space, the space game’s first expansion that takes us to House Va’Ruun territory, is the first proper expansion and a chance to make Starfield feel a bit less barren.
Howard made the comments in a recent interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays (thanks, Kotaku), where he compared Bethesda’s plans for Starfield with what they did for Fallout 4.
“Content wise, we’re looking at what we did with Far Harbor on Fallout 4,” Howard said. “This is a scope that works for our development in doing this annual story expansion type of thing. So really excited about that, and it lets us do some things the way we would in previous games and give people not completely that experience because it’s still Starfield, but this new kind of alien world that you’re able to explore and it takes place there.”
Most of this new possibility comes from setting Shattered Space in a single, hand-crafted series of locations instead of firing you into a procedurally generated galaxy where anything can happen and nothing usually does. Quests and exploration will, in theory, feel a bit more grounded and have more to say about the galaxy and your place in it, which, if it pans out that way, could be pretty promising.
Howard also said the team is planning at least one additional major Starfield expansion, which tallies with what Xbox said prior to the game’s 2023 launch. What that expansion might be is anyone’s guess, though.
Starfield Shattered Space launches sometime in fall 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC via Windows and Steam.
