Houston mayor, city leaders discuss plans ahead of heavy rain expected for the area
Officials said high-water rescue vehicles are ready to go if needed.
HOUSTON — Houston city leaders have begun preparations as excessive rain and flooding are expected to impact the Houston area beginning Tuesday and lasting through Wednesday.
During a news conference Monday, Houston Mayor John Whitmire, acting Houston Police Chief Larry Satterwhite, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña and others came together to let Houston residents know they're on the same page,
Officials said high-water rescue vehicles are ready to go if needed.
"That is always a concern. That is the primary rescue response call type that we go out to every time we get some heavy rain. Do not drive on flooded streets if you cannot see the road, stay off those streets," Peña said.
Both Houston police and fire officials said they're better prepared than they were during Hurricane Harvey. They also said they are checking back in with communities hit hard by May's derecho storm.
This City also wants to make sure drains and ditches are clear from any debris and urges residents to call 311 as soon as possible to get that debris cleared up.
The National Hurricane Center is closely watching Potential Tropical Cyclone One over southern Mexico and the Bay of Campeche. A potential tropical cyclone is a low-pressure system over tropical waters with organized storms that has a high chance of forming into a tropical depression or tropical storm within 48 hours.
Potential Tropical Cyclone One has formed over the Bay of Campeche and could take on the name Alberto within the next 1-2 days.
PTC One could bring rounds of tropical downpours this week across coastal Texas. Weather models are in agreement that the heaviest rain will be up and down the Texas coast from Houston-Galveston to South Texas.
