Several Juneteenth events canceled or postponed due to weather concerns

A tropical system is expected to dump heavy rainfall on the Houston area Tuesday and Wednesday leading to the cancellation of some events.

HOUSTON — With the threat of heavy rain and the risk of flooding in Southeast Texas, some communities are canceling or postponing Juneteenth events planned for Wednesday.

A weak tropical system is expected to develop in the Bay of Campeche by Tuesday. While landfall won't happen near Houston, the system is expected to dump heavy rain across the area on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Storm Prediction Center is now including a significant risk for flooding on Wednesday across Southeast Texas.

Since Juneteenth is a federal holiday, several events in the Greater Houston area are planned for Wednesday but some have already been canceled because of weather concerns.

Houston Juneteenth Family Fun Day canceled

"Due to the impending inclement weather, and safety concerns for our vendors and attendees, we have decided to cancel this year's Juneteenth Family Fun Day event, which was scheduled for Wednesday, June 19," organizers announced. They said Monday's Emancipation Conversation and Tuesday's health fair, both at Emancipation Park, are still scheduled to take place.

Fort Bend County Juneteenth event postponed

The City of Kendleton's 50th Annual Juneteenth Celebration is postponed until further notice, Fort Bend County announced Monday. The event was scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, at Bates M. Allen Park.

Galveston Juneteenth Family Fun Day postponed

The Reedy Chapel AME Church in Galveston is postponing its annual Juneteenth Family Fun Day until Saturday, June 29, at 1 p.m. because of weather concerns. The church's reenactment march will also be held on June 29.
