Kyrie Irving's warning to potential Celtics is being taken out of context

Kyrie Irving has risked the wrath of Boston Celtics fans again.

On Sunday, the point guard advised players interested in joining the Celtics to "do your homework" before committing to the team. Irving's comments came after he was asked what lessons he'd learned during his time with the franchise.

"The community has integrated into the Celtics' team," Irving said. "That's probably the best way I could say it. The community is what makes the Celtics great here, the Boston pandemonium. That's what makes this space so loud and so special, and they take pride in it. So if any player is coming here, getting drafted here, thinking about coming here for free agency or getting traded here, I just think do your homework and make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. That's something I could offer."

Irving's comments have been taken out of context. He wasn't berating the Celtics organization or its fanbase. He was instructing players on what to expect from a team deeply rooted in its community — a fanbase that demands maximum effort on every possession.

Wearing a Celtics jersey means opening yourself up to consistent criticism. The media landscape in Boston is unforgiving. The fanbase can only be appeased with championships. Anything less than a banner is deemed a failure.

Irving pointed out those details, which is why he also admitted that he didn't take his responsibility as a Celtics player as seriously as he should have.

Celtics fans will certainly let Irving hear their frustrations on Monday. However, in reality, his comments were complimentary rather than inflammatory; they've just been portrayed in the wrong light.

Unfortunately for Irving, that's nothing new for his time in Boston.
