Euro 2024: Why VAR ruled out Croatia goal vs Spain after Ivan Perisic confusion
Bruno Petkovic could scarcely have come closer to scoring Croatia's first goal at Euro 2024.
The Dinamo Zagreb forward had been on the pitch for less than 10 minutes when Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri brought him down in the box. The 29-year-old was preparing to tap into an open goal before the Spaniard made the foul from behind with his goalkeeper and defenders left scrambling.
It was then Petkovic who stepped up from the spot to face Unai Simon. The Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper was looking to make amends.
Spain's No.1 did so with an impressive save but could not guide the ball to safety. Petkovic again found the ball at his feet and on this occasion was able to find the net.
It was not a strike that would change the game, but goal difference could prove crucial in what is set to be a close and competitive group that is also home to Italy and Albania. However it was a short lived moment of relief as VAR looked to intervene.
There was some confusion over the issue in Berlin, and some Croatian frustration too - particularly when referee Michael Oliver then signalled that the goal had been ruled out and a free-kick was awarded to Spain.
There was judged to be encroachment during the penalty. Though it did not impede Simon's ability to make the save, it was adjudged to have provided Croatia with an advantage from the rebound. Ivan Perisic was deemed the figure responsible for the incident.

The screen inside of the stadium read: "Indirect free kick. Attacking player number 14 encroached into the area before the kick".
It will provide a moment of frustration for Croatia but Spain were worth their three points. Alvaro Morata was given space in the middle of the pitch to drive into the box and slotted past Dominik Livakovic.
Fabian Ruiz was soon in on the party to double his side's lead after 32 minutes. Barcelona ace Pedri found his teammate before Ruiz worked himself into space to finish.
The European Championships youngest ever player, Lamine Yamal then starred for his nation's third. The 16-year-old took the ball from a short corner before delivering a delicious ball for Real Madrid veteran Dani Caravajal to finish before the opening 45 minutes was done.
