Silver service from 'delighted' Taoiseach as he hails Ireland's triumphant athletes
The Irish women's relay team ran the rule over the Taoiseach’s office on Friday to celebrate their European Championships success.
Describing them as inspirations to the country, Simon Harris paid homage to all those involved in the games in Rome at a special reception at Leinster House.

‘I was delighted to welcome our athletes to Government Buildings this morning to congratulate them on behalf of the country for their success at the European Athletics Championships,’ he said.

He continued: ‘These results give our athletes and the public great momentum ahead of the Olympic Games this summer and I know the whole country will get behind and support each one of them.’
Athletics duo Sharlene Mawdsley and Sophie Becker were among those in attendance with medals in hand. The pair delivered silver for Ireland as part of the women’s 4×400 relay team on Wednesday, while Ms Mawdsley ended the country’s wait for a gold in the mixed relay.

And apart from the relay medals, Ciara Mageean claimed the 1,500m gold while Rhasidat Adeleke secured a 400m individual silver. Other athletes commended by the Taoiseach included Phil Healy, Lauren Cadden, Mark Smyth, Joseph Ojewumi and Hiko Tonosa.

Notably absent from the reception was Ms Adeleke. It’s reported that the 21-year-old and her coach Edrick Floreal were deeply disappointed that she didn’t take home the gold in her solo event.
She’s understood to be returning to Texas, where she recently graduated from University, to continue training for the Olympics.
