Billions of dollars in support for Ukraine as world leaders unite at G7 meeting
Happening now, Ukraine has received much needed support from G7 leaders, securing a loan of more than $75 billion to bolster armed forces. Let's go live to 9 Europe correspondent Jess Millward in London. Jess, the US is vowing to stick by Ukraine for the long term. Carl, good morning. That's right, President Biden reaffirming that pledge at a media conference that wrapped up in Italy a short time ago. That is where the G7 summit is being held in Ukraine was top of the discussion list. A10 year bilateral security agreement has been signed between the US and Ukraine. This really does pave the way for Ukraine to join NATO and G7 leaders have also committed $50 billion US in funding for Ukraine. It is such a cash strapped war weary country now entering. At the third year of this war that will be funded by interest from frozen Russian assets. So understandably Russia isn't happy about this. They have labeled it theft, but it will be a much needed cash injection for Ukraine. Lasting peace for Ukraine must be underwritten by Ukraine's own ability to defend itself now and to deter future aggression anytime in the in the future. United States going to help ensure the Ukraine can do both, not by sending American troops to fight in Ukraine, but by providing weapons and ammunition, expanding intelligence sharing, continuing to train brave Ukrainian troops. So a clear message there from President Joe Biden and the rest of the G7 leaders. The president was also asked about another conflict, that of the war in Gaza and whether or not he thought that a ceasefire will be reached soon. He responded no. He was then later asked to clarify those comments and he refused to do so. So potentially a big blow to discussions that are ongoing in Egypt. A lot of talk around the president's health as well attending this summit. He has pulled out of a state dinner this evening. The White House says we shouldn't read too much into that. But Pullier in Italy, not a bad place for a work conference, I say, Carl. Miss dinner, Jess. Thank you.
