NYY News: Torres ticketed for short term?
Bleacher Report | Zachary D. Rymer: Big home run on Wednesday notwithstanding, it’s been a nightmare of a contract year for Gleyber Torres. Coming into camp looking for a big year to translate into a big free agent deal, the Yankee second baseball has fallen flat on his face. A 92 wRC+ through 71 games hasn’t inspired much confidence in a bounceback as we approach the halfway mark of the season, and it’s time to consider whether Torres would accept a one-year pillow deal in the winter, and what that might be worth. He doesn’t turn 28 until December, so a one-year contract might still capture his prime production, but fans may be losing their patience for the one-time top prospect.
NJ.com | Max Goodman: As noted yesterday, Gerrit Cole will take another step forward in his rehab tonight, starting for the Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in a road contest against Rochester. Manager Aaron Boone was noncommittal if this would be the last rehab start for Cole before rejoining the MLB club, but if nothing else we’re awfully close to the reigning Cy Young winner being back in pinstripes. If it’s not during next week’s home series against Baltimore, then the following road trip is another possibility.
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Michael Tonkin is working himself into Boone’s circle of trust, as the journeyman reliever has a 0.89 ERA in 20.1 innings for the Yankees. It’s been a long, strange trip for Tonkin, who was cut by three different organizations just this season, but he seems to have found his footing in the Bronx for now. (We ran a story on Tonkin as part of Thursday morning’s news as well, but here’s another one that’s not behind a paywall.)
New York Daily News | Mike Lupica: The Red Sox and Yankees face off for the first time this season tonight, at a time when the rivalry seems to be at one of its coolest periods. The Yankees are in a battle for best team in baseball, while the Red Sox are treading water and the fans seem to be near at war with ownership. The Yankees do come into Fenway as favorites this weekend, but even a couple big wins may not be as sweet as in years past.
Lastly, we don’t have many details on this, but per YES Network’s Conor Foley, outfield prospect Everson Pereira is out for the rest of 2024. There is no information on the injury just yet, but Triple-A Scranton moved him to the full-season IL. The 23-year-old has had a tough go of it ever since he got his cup of coffee in the majors late last year, and the now-healthy Jasson Domínguez has fully passed him on the depth chart. Pereira hit just .151/.233/.194 with a 23 wRC+ and no homers in 27 MLB games in 2023, and though he played decently enough in 40 games at Triple-A (118 wRC+), he demonstrated the same strikeout tendencies that have plagued him in the past. Best of luck to Pereira in his recovery.
