G7 warns Russia of consequences for using nuclear weapons

Russia faces serious consequences if it decides to use nuclear or chemical weapons, according to the communiqué following the Group of Seven (G7) summit.

The G7 leaders expressed concern over Russia's irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and the increasing reports of Russia's use of chemicals against Ukrainian soldiers.

"We reiterate that any use of chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weapons by Russia would be met with severe consequences," the communiqué says.

The G7 also expressed concern over China's non-transparent and accelerated expansion of its nuclear arsenal and the development of North Korea's and Iran's nuclear programs.

The leaders supported the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

"We call on Russia to continue to adhere to the moratorium on nuclear tests and renew the CTBT ratification. We also call on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) not to conduct any further nuclear tests, and to sign and ratify the CTBT," the communiqué says.

Nuclear threats of the Russian Federation

Russian officials have repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons against Western countries.

In particular, in February, Vladimir Putin said that his country could demonstrate an intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat capable of carrying a nuclear charge.
