Andy Robertson admits Scotland 'didn't show up' and 'got it all wrong' during 5-1 humbling by Germany as Euro 2024 campaign gets off to worst possible start

Andy Robertson was heavily critical of Scotland's performance versus Germany Robertson says Scotland were 'hugely disappointing' as they lost 5-1 in opener LISTEN to It’s All Kicking Off! Why Euro 2024 could give us an ‘old school’ tournament once again

Andy Robertson was heavily critical of Scotland's display after they were thrashed 5-1 by hosts Germany in the opening game of Euro 2024.

It was a miserable commencement to the tournament for Scotland, who had Ryan Porteous sent off just before half time.

Germany opened the scoring through Florian Wirtz in the tenth minute before Jamal Musiala made it 2-0 nine minutes later.

Porteous was then dismissed for a rash challenge on Ilkay Gundogan, with Kai Havertz subsequently scoring from the penalty spot.

There was further misery to come for Scotland as Niclas Fullkrug's fine finish made it 4-0 to Germany.

An own goal from Antonio Rudiger temporarily reduced the deficit before Emre Can made it 5-1 to Germany late on.

Robertson was extremely disappointed with the way in which Scotland performed.

Robertson told ITV: 'First half we just got it all wrong. Didn't really show up, weren't aggressive enough, let good players on the ball. They had a game plan and we did and theirs worked a million times better. It wasn't because of the practice, it was because we didn't put it together on the pitch.

'Second half, we're down to ten men. The lads dug in really well and we lose a sloppy goal at the end and you could have drawn the second half but it's no consolation.

'Today was hugely disappointing. But you're playing the first game against the host nation and it doesn't get much tougher than that.

'Their big players showed up and were excellent all over the park. They had an answer for everything. I don't think we've played to our maximum. We have to dust ourselves down We have five days to dust ourselves down and go again. We'll take tomorrow to be angry at ourselves and be disappointed and go again.'

Scotland will be looking to perform significantly better in their remaining two group games against Switzerland and Hungary.

Roy Keane heavily disagreed with Robertson's comments and was also critical of how Scotland approached the game.

Roy Keane was dismissive of Robertson's comments and Scotland's overall performance

He said on ITV: 'Andy Robertson spoke at the end of the game and said they had a game plan. It's all well and good having a plan.

'He said they weren't aggressive enough. You have to be aggressive in a game of football. When you're up against opposition who are much stronger than you, being aggressive is part of being a footballer.

'My goodness, when you're playing at this level, you've got to hit people. Hit them properly, hit them aggressively, do it in the right way.'

Keane also stated that Scotland 'should be angry for a long time' after their performance.

'If you step off them like Scotland did tonight... It's no good talking after the game saying we had a game plan. It's rubbish! Andy Robertson... it's all just rubbish coming out.

'You knew before the game what was at stake and after the game it's no good saying "we'll regroup and be angry tomorrow." You should be angry for a long time.

'They spoke before the game about creating history - they're creating history by playing as bad as that and letting their manager and supporters down.'
