High and Low is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's titular 1963 thriller, which tells the story of a shoe company executive faced with an extortion attempt following the kidnapping of his chauffeur's son, who is held for ransom. The original film was a box-office hit in Japan and was well-received critically, later re-released in the U.S. in 2002.
Washington stars in the lead role of the High and Low remake, with Jeffery Wright, Jeremy Sample and Ilfenesh Hadera also highlighting the cast. The film also stars acclaimed rapper Isis "Ice Spice" Gaston in her big-screen debut. It's unknown whether the remake will stay true to the original's story, with the adaptation appearing to be a straight-genre film rather than a crime thriller. The new take on High and Low was confirmed in February, with A24 collaborating on the project with Apple Original Films. Along with his directorial duties, Lee serves as an executive producer through his 40 Acres and a Mule production company.
