PITTSBURGH – Over the past few seasons, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach has caught a ton of criticism for his coaching abilities. Early in his Penguins tenure, there was no doubting Sullivan’s tactics, but it’s been two straight seasons without a playoff appearance.
Many have started to wonder if Sullivan is the right guy for the job in Pittsburgh, but a three-year contract extension that kicks off with the 2024-25 season guarantees he’ll be around a little longer. Despite recent struggles, some still believe he is one of the best coaches in the NHL.
The Jack Adams Award is given annually to the league’s best coach. The 2024 recipient was Rick Tocchet, head coach of Vancouver Cancuks and former Penguins assistant. While Tocchet ran away with the award, Sullivan’s name appeared on the ballot.
Despite missing the playoffs for the second straight year and having his job questioned by fans, Sullivan received a single third-place vote for the Jack Adams Award. The Penguins finished the 2023-24 season 38-32-12, fifth in the Metropolitan Division.
Sullivan was one of two NHL coaches to miss the playoffs yet still receive votes for the Jack Adams. Philadelphia Flyers bench boss John Tortorella earned two second-place votes and a third.
The Jack Adams Award is voted on by the NHL Broadcaster Association, meaning someone who calls NHL games believes Sullivan was a top-three coach in the NHL for 2023-24.
The Penguins continue to back Sullivan and have complete confidence in his abilities. Despite the support, it wouldn’t be shocking if Sullivan’s seat started to get a little warm.
